Fine Wine for the Holidays

January 24th, 2008

Perhaps no one has stressed the beauty and enjoyment of drinking wine better then Ernest Hemmingway, “In Europe we thought of wine as something as healthy and normal as food and also a greater giver of happiness and well being and delight. Drinking wine was not a snobbism… it was as natural as eating and to me as necessary.”

Many that drink wine will tell you that it is a true experience. Very similar to the joy and delight one has when eating their favorite food, the enchantment can be intoxicating. Wine as a gift is ideal for many occasions, especially when there is a celebration taking place. Graduations, engagements, weddings, housewarming, birthdays, dinner parties, and the holidays are all perfect celebrations that can be enhanced with a good bottle of wine.

If you are not a connoisseur then choosing a good bottle of wine can be a little tricky. Whether you are buying the wine for yourself or as a gift, knowing what your preferences are when it comes to wine is important. If you do not know the preference of the person you are gifting the wine to I recommend giving a bottle of you favorite wine. The sentiment combined with the bottle makes a truly unique gift.

If you are shopping around for a bottle of wine and want to make the gift special you may consider adding a gift of wine glasses, or a gift basket of wine and cheese and perhaps fruit. This says that not only does the person you are gifting to important but you really want them to have an experience with the wine. Looking to a make a romantic evening with the one you love, then a basket filled with your favorite bottle of wine, a couple wine glasses, candles and fruit can be a wonderful invitation.

Keep in mind that fine wine does not have to be expensive to be good. There are many wines available that will not cost you a week’s salary but as equally enchanting. To find these wines you can spend some time at a wine shop, or even a good grocery store that has a bountiful selection will have a specialist there that can help. You can also search the internet and look for affordable bottles of wine that have won awards.

I recommend visiting a local winery so that you can do a tasting of the different types of wine they have to offer. This will at least let you figure out the type of wine you prefer, red or white, sweet or dry and this will help you in making choices elsewhere. Most labels will give you an idea of what the taste of the wine will be like.

If you live in an area where there doesn’t happen to be a winery close then hold a wine tasting party. Invite your friends, ask each to bring a bottle of wine, you can even set whether you want a single type of wine, say Reisling, or if you would like everyone to bring their favorite bottle of wine, and then you purchase a two bottles for the party. Put out some cheese and bread and fruit, I also recommend getting oyster crackers or the wafers that are sold to help cleanse the palate in-between tastings. This can be a fun night where everyone gets to broaden their wine preferences

Stylish Wrought Iron Wine Racks - Vintage Look With a Modern Twist

January 11th, 2008

Wine
is so much more than a drink these days. With the right storage a few
bottles of wine become a decorators dream. And there isn’t much that
gives an air of sophistication as much as a few well placed, bottles
of good wine. Whether you drink bubbly, red, white or a combination
you’ll find a wrought iron wine rack to suit your decor and
personality. If you can’t, then have one custom designed.

These
range from a one bottle holders on the bench, table, floor or even
suspended from the wall, to as dozens of bottles storage. The great
part is
wrought iron wine racks are not only stylish and attractive
but they are very functional as well. If price is a factor, these
wine racks come in some very affordable price ranges. These make a
perfect gift idea teamed with a bottle of wine, or alone.

The
designs available are endless really. It depends a lot on the
artistic flair of the person creating them. Like people they range
from flamboyant to quietly understated and everywhere in between.
Wall mounted racks are a great space saver and the sculptured racks
bring out the flavor of your home. Freestanding versions can be in
tower form or spreading luxuriously outwards. All manner of animals,
leaves, vines and timber combine to make some very delightful and
beautiful storage you’ll be proud to show off to your guests.

Wrought
Iron can be traced back to Roman times and was the metal blacksmiths
worked with. Even in modern design it gives an Olde Worlde feel to
your room. The signature black color fits any decor and the designs
can meld into the background or take center place in a room. Of
course, through history the metal was used for the practical side of
construction. Fences, gates, railing, frameworks were made from
wrought iron and even then the ornamental properties of working with
the metal became obvious.

Wrought
iron can sometimes be passed off with mild steel and the difference
is tricky to tell. Mild steel can be bent and worked as easily as
wrought iron but it has other inferior qualities. For instance mild
steel has corrosive properties and is often identified by the lack of
finesses in workmanship. Mild steel is the modern replacement for
wrought iron and it is cheaper but real wrought iron weathers better.
Some metalworkers are bringing the old techniques of forging back
into the art of working with wrought iron.

With
the understandings of modern technology combined with the charm of
vintage design and usage, wrought iron is now a much sought after
material to bring into the home. A metal once known as practical and
hard-wearing can now be described as elegant and innovative. The
smaller version are shaped in everything from winding grape vines to
insects, and the larger wine racks bring a very impressive and even
majestic feel to any room.

Even
if you don’t drink a lot of wine, you probably have friends that do
so having a wrought iron wine rack means you can easily store a small
amount of bottles for visits. Some are designed in a carrier style
enabling you to pop a bottle of wine or two in and carry it easily.
Some are as simple as resting over the neck of a bottle and hanging
two glasses from either side. Practical and stylish, a wrought iron
wine rack is a great addition to the functionality of your home.
